September 3, 2020

In Religion we have been learning about our sin and God's Perfect Plan for us.  I couldn't have said it better than Hannah.

We have talked in class about sharing God's love with kids who are sick.  I have given the students to challenge to ask for special chores so that they can earn money to give for offering.  Please help teach generosity and offer your child opportunities to make money for them to be able to give their own money in offerings.

We are learning to FOCUS, using our eyes, ears, and brain.  When we FOCUS we look at the person talking, we listen to what the person is saying, and we use our brain to think about what the person is telling us to do.  Sometimes we even repeat in our head what they said to remember.  This is something you could practice at home!

CENTER WORK
A center that was completed this week!
We worked on our centers this weeks beginning with last Friday to give us 5 days of center work.  If  centers for the week are completed by Friday, the students get fun Friday.  If centers are not done it needs to be completed before going to fun station.  If it is still not done the center will be sent home to finish over the weekend. Please check your child's Friday Folder to see if he/she has a center to complete and return next week.
A center that was NOT completed after two 20 minute centers.
I will send home the center materials and it will need to be completed at home.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS:
If you are interesting in buying books please go to the link and order and pay online.  Please place your order by Friday September 11.

**READING INFORMATION*
I have done some initial assessments on each child's reading.  I have written some beginning goals for each child.  I will continue to gain knowledge on each child's reading behaviors as we get started on guided reading.  I am so happy with the program Zion uses for Reading as I am able to meet each child at his/her individual reading skills and move them forward by focusing on his/her needs.
I love teaching kids to read and am in my happy place as we had two days of guided reading groups this week!

Please take a look at the pictures that visually explain the various components of our READING PROGRAM.

SHARED READING:
As a class we work on reading skills with me an on grade level text.
We read and share these big books together.  I have mini lessons that help teach the skills that I am focusing on usually working with decoding (sounding words out) and comprehension (retelling and organizing what the story is about).  The students then have the opportunity to listen to these books in a small book at the listen center.

We have been reading non fiction books in a series called, "Big and Small".
Today we organized our learning with a Venn Diagram.
Listening to a past Shared Reading book at the listening center.

INTERACTIVE READ ALOUD:
Each day we spend time listening to a book that I read to the class.  These books are more advanced books and grouped by theme. I also have mini lessons involved in these readings.  These lessons usually focus on upper level thinking such as predicting, inference (why things happen),  discussions about theme, and various discussions about making connections.
This week our decided our theme was books with rhyming words and funny stories.
We really enjoy this time as our love for books is growing.

GUIDED READING:
This is my time to work with small groups of students.  We practice the skills we have been focusing on during the week.  Each student will have his/her own set of goals that I am focusing on for the week in small groups.
We will review a decoding strategy, read a book, work on retell and comprehension strategies, and then play a word work game.
Here we are reading a book as I listen and give individual instruction.
In this word work game we are listening for sounds and writing down the sounds we hear in words.

PHONICS:
We spend a dedicated time where student learn to attend to, learn about, and efficiently use information about sounds, letters, and words.  These are usually hands on activities that help decode print more efficiently.
This week we were detectives looking for words and letters in poems.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS:
Phonemic awareness is the ability to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes.  This is an activity we do daily by listening and manipulating to phonemes.

SPELLING:
We use spelling as time time to learn word patterns, high frequency words, how to spell different sounds we hear in words. We practice making our own word lists with similar patterns.
Here we are using tiles to build -an words.

GRAMMAR:
In Grammar we learn the conventions of our written and spoken language.

We are starting out learning about sentences.

WRITERS WORKSHOP:
We also are learning to be authors.  Reading and writing go hand in hand.  We have started writing small moment stories.
Here are the 3 steps we are learning and working on in our writing.  PS  Do you see our high frequency words on the right?

INDEPENDENT READING CENTERS:
During Busy Bee Center time students practice the skills we have been learning usually with manipulative in  an independent setting with accountability.

sentence center- putting sentences in order
word work- sorting word patterns
reading-sequencing

reading- Scholastic News
writing- compare and contrast

High Frequency Word Practice
I hope this gives you some insight into our READING!

Thank you for filling out the Reading Logs.  You may have seen your child "won" a book for a complete log.  If you didn't meet the goal this month you can try again in September.

In a few weeks, I will be sending home a little book for your child to read a few times each week to practice fluency.

It is exciting to see the students learn the routine of first grade.  I am very proud that they come in and do the morning work with few reminders.  I am also so pleased at how the students are working during independent reading centers.  Way to be hard workers and independent!

Have a wonderful 4 day weekend!
Make you make worship a priority for your family!

In HIS Love,
Amy
