HOLY WEEK

As we approach Holy Week I remember something Pastor Rouland 

wrote about in The Good News last year.  He said,

“If your experience of Holy Week looks just like every other week, you’ve missed a

big piece of the point … worship is work, and it is sacrifice, and it should be a time

set aside for something very different than the rest of life.”

Zion has many worship opportunities this week.  

Think about what Pastor Rouland said and join us.

We have had a Lindenwood student named Miss Dees in our room.  She has taught one math lesson and will be teaching another lesson next week.  She is doing a great job!

For Art in the next weeks I am in need of beads and buttons.  If you have any you would like to donate to our class I would appreciate if you sent them in next week.

We had the best time creating art like Dale Chihuly.  He works with glass.  Take a look at our pictures and come see our work hanging up in the hall.

First we colored plastic cups with
Sharpie Markers.

We colored 3 cups for our own sculpture.

We tried to put a lot of color on each cup.

We also colored a cup or plate for the class sculpture.

Then we put the cups in a toaster oven at 400 F
for about 8 seconds.
We watched closely as the cups began to melt.

Then we molded the melted plastic using a towel.
The cups were quite warm

Mrs. Bernhardt and Ms Dees helped us put the melted cups together with hot glue.

As we celebrate Palm Sunday we sing, "Hosanna, Hosanna, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna!"  Please have your child join the Palm Sunday parade at church this weekend.  Meet in the welcome center before the church service and march in with palms during the opening hymn.  The Children's Message will be right away and then the children may join you in your seats.

First Grade's Artwork Donated to Zion's Auction

I have seen so much growth this year.  It is hard to believe that it is fourth quarter and these first graders will soon be second graders.  I’m sure you have seen the growth also.  What a joy to see these children grow academically, but more importantly spiritually.  This class amazes me everyday.

putting on a performance of “We Like Sheep” on

Friday, May 4, at 7:00.  

Please mark your calendars now. Plan to attend this exciting event!

It contains information from Mrs. Gilmore about needed items for the musical including costumes, props, and parent helpers.  This is part of our first grade music and everyone will be part of our musical.  

I have told you that Lent is my favorite season of the church year.  I want to encourage you to attend the special services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.  Maundy Thursday service is a dramatization of the last supper.  Maundy Thursday is April 5; the services are at 3:30 and 7:00.  Good Friday is a powerful Tenebrae service that focuses on Jesus last day.  It is such a moving service and helps to make Easter an extra special celebration.  Good Friday is April 6; 
the services are at 3:30 and 7.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING LETTER...

1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd Grade Parents.

We are excited to announce that the 1^st -3^rd grade students will be putting on a performance of “We Like Sheep” on Friday, May 4 at 7:00.  Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend this exciting event! 

Costumes:

Students will be dressing up as lambs for their costume and will need to have the following items:

§  Black long sleeve shirt

§  Black pants

§  White shirt (needed by April 3)

§  500 cotton balls (needed by April 3)

The white shirt will and cotton balls will need to be provided by April 3, as this is when we are going to begin making our costumes by gluing cotton balls to the white t-shirts in class. 

Items to be donated:

§  Tacky Glue - to glue cotton balls to t-shirt (needed by April 3)

§  Black and Pink Felt - for lamb ears

§  Black face paint - to paint noses black on the night of the performance

§  Props - I will announce these to the students as we see what we will need

§  Cookies/dessert items  - for reception after the musical.

Other areas I need help with:

o   Set Design

o   Costumes (We will need lamb ears sewn for each student)

o   Advertising

o   Reception after the play in the Fellowship Hall

We are the Body of Christ

Together bringing His love to the world

We work together, We do it with cooperation!

This is from one of the songs KID'S PRAISE, a musical put on by 4th and 5th graders.  What a wonderful message, that we are all part of Christ and we show God's love to others.  What a blessing our class is to so many.  We continue to get cards and cookies from people for whom we have prayed.  I see first graders helping younger children.  I hear us giving compliments and encouragement to each other.  I am very proud of the cooperation in this class.

The weathers makes us think that summer is almost here, yet we still have a quarter to go.  Third quarter report cards will be available on edline Friday, March 16 after 3.  If you have any trouble viewing the report card please call the office.

OPTIONAL PARENT CONFERENCE:  If you would like a third quarter parent conference please go the google doc I have set up.  You can access the doc with this link and sign up for a time.  These are optional conferences and if you don't hear from me specifically about meeting, these conferences are up your choice.  I wanted to make them available to everyone.  This conference would be to discuss your child's progress so far this year.

ACHIEVEMENT TEST NEXT WEEK

Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.  This is the first time the students will be experiencing this type of testing.  It is important that they learn the process and get used to this type of evaluation tool.  Although in first grade I am not always sure of the accuracy of the assessment.  Due to the limited exposure to this type of test.  It is good to practice taking these types of tests and will give some sort of a baseline for future years.  We will be spending a lot of time this week talking and learning about taking tests as well as taking the achievement tests.  I always stress to just do your best.  Please don't put any pressure on your child about this test.  You probably don't even need to mention the tests to your child.

SCIENCE ACTIVITIES:  Since we are learning about taking care of the earth that God has made for us we have decided to put, REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE into practice.

To REDUCE we are going to always use both sides of paper, to RECYCLE I told the class they can bring aluminum cans in next week and we will recycle them, and to practice REUSE I have told the class to bring in up to 3 unused toys and up to 3 already read books.  The class will then be able to choose 'new' toys and books.  Please send the items in by Wednesday as we will 'swap' the toys then.  The toys and books will NOT be returned instead they will be reused by someone else.

SCIENCE DAY AT LUTHERAN HIGH:  APRIL 21 9:00 am
I have not heard from anyone about participating in this day.  I would highly encourage my bright students to sign up for some of the activities.  Please email me your teams or I can help put the teams together for you. 


KLEENEX AND CLORAX WIPES NEEDED:  We have only one box of tissue and 2 containers of wipes left.  Please send one of each in next week.  THANK YOU!!
