February 28, 2014

Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday.  Lent is my favorite time of the church year.  I like the Wednesday after school church services, and I have to admit I like the meals following.  During Lent I try to recommit myself to personal devotions and prayer.  This is a time to focus on Jesus and His great love for us.  Jesus gave His life so that I can life.

For it is by GRACE you have been saved through faith and this is not from yourselves it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one can boast.  Ephesians 2:8-9

There is nothing I can do to gain forgiveness and eternal life it is God's gift through Jesus!  So instead of giving something up for Lent try doing the opposite and adding something ... maybe commit to Wednesday night church, attend Sunday Bible Classes, do personal devotions, do family devotions, or make weekend worship a priority in your family.  I know your faith life will be strengthened.

LENT WORSHIP CENTERS:  On Monday of next week each child will be making a worship center for your home to help you will Lent Devotions.  This will come home on Monday, the cross can be used like an advent wreath, as you light a candle each week till Easter.  Lent begins on Wednesday so you will light the candle and add candles on Wednesdays.  I hope this helps your family focus your thoughts to Christ this Lent.  If you need a Lent family devotion book please let me know.

Even with the electricity out we were able to learn about congruent shapes.

Congruent Rectangles

We counted beans by putting them into groups of 10.

This week we were inspired by Wassily Kandinsky.
We practiced cutting as we made concentric circles.
We painted rocks for a church bulletin cover.

Look for this bulletin cover at a Wednesday Lent service.
Busy working on our miracle project.

We worked in groups to tell a miracle of Jesus.
Miss Keucker helped us take pictures for our miracle video using the iPod.
Mrs. Helmkamp showed us how to use an app on the ipod to turn our pictures and voices into a presentation about miracles.  Look for the videos at the end of the pictures on this blog.

We painted birds for our Auction Artwork.  Look for the finished project soon and make sure to go to the auction for an opportunity to bid on our artwork.

Thursday was a Spirit Pep Assmebly!

Charlotte was chosen to be part of the relay race.

We tested properties of different solids: float or sink...

...length in cm...

...mass in grams...

... and magnetic or not magnetic.
Please watch our Miracle Presentations and look for more stories as we learn to use the ipods to present a story in picture and sound!

Peace Be Still
sung to the tune of “All through the Night”

Jesus in the boat was sleeping
       “Peace, be still”
Though a storm winds start a blowing
       “Peace, be still”
Thunder, lightning waves are pounding
Disciples cry, “Jesus we’re drowning!”
Jesus wakes and calms the storm
       “PEACE, BE STILL”
In our Bible story this week the disciples were in a storm on the sea.  They actually thought that they were going to die. Jesus calmed the storm with His words, "Peace, Be Still" showing He has power over nature.  We too may find ourselves in the 'noisy' storm of life.  Jesus can calm the storms in our lives and fill us with His peace.  Peace comes from trusting God's care and knowing that because Jesus is with us everything will be alright.

Next Friday Invitations to Grandparent's Day will come home in the homework folder.  GRANDPARENT'S DAY is MARCH 14.  This day is for Grandparents or another special adult to spend the morning with us at school.  This is a half day of school.  In the invitation is a schedule of the mornings events.

Please fill out the permission form (also coming home next Friday in the Friday folder) so that I know who is taking your child home from school on Friday, March 14, Grandparent's Day.

Auction is April 4, it is a great night.  It would be fun to have several first grade tables attend!!  We will be starting our special artwork for the auction!  You will want to be there to bid on the framed one of a kind student art!

Thank you for getting to school earlier.  We still had a few tardies, but the number was less.  Please work to leave a few minutes early to insure arriving at school on time, before 8:00.

I am beginning to get a little more picky with grading.  I am expecting more from the students.  I do expect that sentences are writing correctly and that math problems are written correctly.  Please check your child's work to see how they are doing.  I am disappointed with the number of CAR, Correct And Return, papers.  Please look over math papers and maybe say, "I see something wrong or missing" and have your child fix the paper before it comes to school.  If your child has a lot of CAR in centers check to see way and remind them to make sure they have correct sentences before turning the paper in.

May the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times in every way!
2 Thessalonians 3:16

May you get peace and refueled this weekend by spending time with God in Church and Bible study this weekend!

In HIM,
Amy

We are making art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky.

We are working with a partner to stretch a sentence.

We are learning the addition facts doubles plus one.
Here are the steps to solve these problems.
1.  Are the numbers next door neighbors? If yes then it is a doubles plus 1.
2. Find the smaller number.
3.  Double the smaller number.
4. Add one to the answer.
Example: 4+5=
yes, the numbers are next door neighbors, 4 is smaller, 4+4=8, 8+1=9
4+5=9

We observed matter and describe properties of matter.

Kindergarten came in undercover looking for the Gingerbread Man.

We practiced measuring and pouring while making a devotion Bible story reminder for at home.

We worked with partners to find different parts of non-fiction books.

We have had a lot of tardies lately.  Please help your child start the day on a good note by giving them enough time to come into the classroom, turn in the homework, mark lunch, and put on their gym shoes.  A reminder that we leave for music or P.E. at 8:02 everyday but Wednesday and then we go to church.  When your child comes in late they miss those classes as they need to do the other morning jobs first.  A good time to get to school is 7:50.  Thank you

Enjoy the long weekend.  Make a point to be in worship this weekend and join me in eating sausage on Sunday!
